Hip Replacement Recall

AARP News - Damages Awarded in Johnson &Johnson’s DePuy Hip Implant Case

Failure of Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Hip Implant in a High Number of Cases Leads to DePuy Hip Lawsuit

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopedics Inc. recalled the ASR XL Acetabular System and the the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The ASR XL Acetabular System was available in the US and worldwide, while the ASR Hip Resurfacing System was only available outside the US. The defective DePuy hip recall affects about 93, 000 patients and was implanted in patients between the years of 2003 and 2010.

What are the DePuy Hip Replacement Problems?

Patients receiving the defective DePuy hip implant had a high rate of pain and other problems, requiring approximately 12 to 13 % of them to need a second surgery. Documented problems included loose hip cups and hip dislocations, bone fractures, inflammation and pseudo-tumors from metal debris, allergic reactions and permanent muscle and tissue damage.

While the recall does not necessarily mean that you will have to have the hip implant removed, it means that you should be monitored to be sure problems do not occur.

Is My DePuy Hip Implant Defective? How Do I Know If I Have a Recalled DePuy Hip Replacement?

Contact your surgeon or hospital if you are not sure whether you have the recalled DePuy hip implant. They can determine whether your hip implant is affected by the recall.

If you did receive the DePuy hip replacement, you will need to contact your doctor or surgeon to have it checked to be sure it is working properly. The doctor will probably recommend an X-ray or imaging scan to check the hip implant and a blood test to determine whether metal particles from the implants are a problem.

This will protect your legal rights and make sure you do not unknowingly sign a waiver or give up valuable evidence should you have problems in the future.
